Ramblings on words and magic words

Márcia Batista Ramos

(Brazil)

I always say that the words drip one by one, making noise. Breaking the silence. Bringing sighs that sometimes betray. Words are often indiscreet because they dig into the past and remove the rug, causing one to stumble and fall where there is no noise, where memories dwell… As Clarice Lispector said, that is where I go. I go to the memories because the sigh brought the joy of days full of magic when the words, jumping, turned into laughter. It seemed like an unwritten story that would never end. The memories came by themselves as colorful, scented, tasty words.

Someone lovingly called my name. Afterwards, we could run on the grass. It was sunny on a winter day when I saw you lying on the grass in the tourist park, on one side a sculpture and on the other side, another. I passed by, without interrupting your moment of recreation, together with your small retinue of veteran muses. My eyes will touch your worn jeans. No matter. That is not part of the beautiful days, when words multiplied as in a hall of infinite mirrors, where peace enveloped time. In the time when someone said my name with love.

Many times the words are wet, sticky; because they keep a lot of feelings without anyone noticing. There are words that do not want to look at the old photos again, of the hours that have passed so long ago. But the words dare not say, they stutter and fall silent. They feel compelled to watch and share happy memories, when their heart is beating in another beat. Wet words pile up in your throat on cold days when you wanted to be stoking the fireplace, listening to the sound of the river and living your life differently; possibly, in the dream way, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the small house. Yes. The slippery words dropped the idea that what was not would be better.

Many things are said with words. It is also sung along with the voice of the unforgettable Cesária Évora, “Sodade”. Memories of the history of anyone who left and did not return. Surely, because he found different words for love, joy and peace; then, he drowned in a valley of lies. Because the lie is the word that betrays, that does not deserve to be pronounced. Because he always talks about what does not exist, no matter how great it expresses, the lie is worth very little. A mask on another mask, to create an image that does not correspond to the one that vegetates under the masks. Once, some masks were part of the beautiful days. Now it doesn't matter anymore. The masks fell long ago. They broke, leaving words on the Landscape.

The wind carries and brings the words, some are confused with secrets, some dry wounds, others erase scars. From the east come the words “myr, radistʹ, lyubov”, they are magic words. Are real. I try to repeat each one like a mantra. I hope they materialize and walk solid through the world. I hope they multiply like mushrooms after the rain. “Myr, radistʹ, lyubov” are magic words.
